Circumcising African men may cut their risk of catching AIDS in half, the National Institutes of Health said today as it stopped two clinical trials in Africa, when preliminary results suggested that circumcision worked so well that it would be unethical not to offer it to uncircumcised men in the trials.

AIDS experts immediately hailed the result, saying it gave the world a new way to fight the spread of AIDS, and the directors of the two largest funds for fighting the disease said they would now consider paying for circumcisions.
"This is very exciting news," said Daniel Halperin, an H.I.V. specialist at Harvard's Center for Population and Development, who has argued in scientific journals for years that circumcision slows the spread of AIDS in the parts of Africa where it is practiced.
In an interview from Zimbabwe, Mr. Halperin added: "I have no doubt that, as word of this gets around, millions of African men will want to get circumcised and that will save many lives."
But experts also cautioned that circumcision is no cure-all. It only lessens the chances that a man will catch the virus, it is expensive compared to condoms, abstinence or other methods, and the surgery has serious risks if performed by folk healers using dirty blades, as often happens in rural Africa.
Sex education messages to young men need to make it clear that "this does not mean that you have an absolute protection," said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, an AIDS researcher and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which sponsored the trials. Circumcision should be added to other prevention methods, not replace them, he said.
The two trials were carried out among nearly 3,000 men in Kisumu, Kenya, and nearly 5,000 men in Rakai, Uganda. None were infected with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS; they were divided into circumcised and uncircumcised groups. They were given safe sex advice — although many presumably did not take it — and retested regularly.
The trials were stopped by the National Institutes of Health's Data Safety and Monitoring Board this week after data showed that the Kenyan men had a 53 percent reduction in new H.I.V. cases and the Ugandan men a 48 percent reduction.
In Kenya, 22 of the 1,393 circumcised young men in the study caught the disease, compared with 47 of the 1,391 uncircumcised men.
Those results echo the finding of a trial completed last year in the town of Orange Farm, South Africa, financed by the French government, which demonstrated a reduction of 60 percent among circumcised men.
Two agencies, one under the State Department and the other financed by a number of countries, said they now would be willing to pay for circumcisions, which they have not before, citing a lack of hard evidence that it works.
Dr. Richard G. A. Feachem, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, said that if a country seeking money submitted plans to conduct safe, sterile circumcisions, "I think it's very likely that our technical panel would approve it."
Ambassador Mark Dybul, executive director of the $15 billion President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in the State Department, said his agency "will support implementation of safe medical male circumcision for HIV/AIDS prevention."
He too warned that it was only one new weapon.
"Prevention efforts must reinforce the ABC approach — abstain, be faithful and correct and consistent use of condoms," he said.
Uncircumcised men are thought to be more susceptible to AIDS because the underside of the foreskin is rich in Langerhans' cells, which attach easily to the virus. The foreskin may also suffer small tears during intercourse, making it more susceptible to infection.
Researchers have long noted that parts of Africa where circumcision is practiced — particularly in the Muslim countries of West Africa — had much lower AIDS rates. But it was unclear whether other factors, such as religion or polygamy, played important roles.
Outside Muslim regions, circumcision is spotty. In South Africa, for example, the Xhosa people circumcise teen-age boys, while Zulus, whose traditional homeland abuts theirs, do not. AIDS is common in members of both tribes.
In recent years, as word has spread that circumcision might be protective, many African men have sought it out. A Zambian hospital offered $3 circumcisions last year, and Swaziland trained 60 doctors to give them at $40 each after its waiting lists grew.
"Private practitioners also do it," Dr. Halperin said. "In some places, it's $20, in others, much more. Lots of the wealthy elite have already done it. It prevents STD's, it's seen as cleaner, sex is better, women like it. I predict that
a lot of men who can't afford private clinics will start clamoring for it."

CHINA’S rapid industrialisation has likely made extinct a species of fresh water dolphin
that had been on Earth for over 20 million years.A team of scientists from China, Japan and the United States failed to find the white dolphin, known as the baiji, during a six-week search of its natural habitat in the Yangtze river late last year. "This result means the baiji is likely extinct,'' Wang Ding, who led the survey and is one of the world's leading experts on the species, said.The dolphin was a victim of devastating pollution, illegal fishing and heavy cargo traffic on the Yangtze, Wang said.The findings mean the baiji is likely the first mammal to become extinct in more than 50 years. It is the cousin of the bottlenose dolphin, which is also on the critically endangered list. Wang, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasised that not all hope was lost for the dolphin, which had made its home along the lower reaches of China's now heavily polluted Yangtze River for more than 20 million years. "We are not saying the baiji is already gone,'' he said. But he lamented that further searches this year had failed to find any sign of the dolphin. Wang said that a letter written by the survey team had been published in the latest issue of the Royal Society Biology Letters journal in Britain to confirm the dolphin was believed to be extinct. The baiji, identifiable by its long, teeth-filled snout and low dorsal fin, was last officially sighted more than two years ago. The last confirmed count by a research team was conducted in 1997, when just 13 were recorded. Up to 5000 baiji were believed to have lived in the Yangtze less than a century ago, according to the baiji.org website, which was established by a range of international conservation groups. Other rare species that live in the Yangtze, such as the Chinese sturgeon and the finless porpoise, are also in danger of extinction.

THE Pentagon cannot account for 190,000 AK-47 rifles and pistols given to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005 - about half the weapons earmarked for soldiers and police.
The Government Accountability Office(GAO), the investigative arm of the US Congress, said in a July 31 report to lawmakers that the Defence Department also could not account for 135,000 items of body armour and 115,000 helmets reported to be issued to Iraqi forces as of September 22, 2005.
The GAO said the Pentagon concurred with its findings and had begun a review to ensure full accountability for the program to train and equip Iraqi forces.
"However, our review of the 2007 property books found continuing problems with missing and incomplete records," the GAO report said.
The report raised concerns that weapons provided by the United States could be falling into the hands of Iraqi insurgents, just as politicians and policymakers in Washington await a September report on the success of US President George W. Bush's surge strategy for stabilising Baghdad.
One senior Pentagon official told The Washington Post some weapons probably were being used against US troops. He said an Iraqi brigade created in Fallujah disintegrated in 2004 and began fighting American soldiers.
Many in Washington view the development of effective Iraqi army and police forces as a vital step toward reducing the number of US troops in Iraq.
Since 2003, the United States has provided about $US19.2 billion ($22.55bn) to develop Iraqi security forces, the GAO said. The Defence Department has recently asked for another $US2bn ($2.35bn) to continue the train-and-equip program.
Congress funded the program for Iraqi security forces outside traditional security assistance programs, providing the Pentagon with a large degree of flexibility in managing the effort, the GAO said.
"Officials stated that since the funding did not go through traditional security assistance programs, the DOD accountability requirements normally applicable to these programs did not apply," the GAO report said.
Military officials in Iraq reported issuing 355,000 weapons to Iraqi security forces from June 2004 through September 2005, including 185,000 rifles and 170,000 pistols, the GAO said.
But the Defence Department could not account for 110,000 rifles and 80,000 pistols, the GAO said. Those sums amount to about 54 per cent of the total weapons distributed to the Iraqi forces.
The GAO quoted officials as saying the agency responsible for handling weapons distribution was too short-staffed to record information on individual items given to Iraqi forces.
Accountability procedures also could not be fully implemented because of the need to equip Iraqi forces rapidly for combat operations, the GAO found.

Ha ha ha now let me explain myself first, i've been living in a third world country for the last couple of years with my trusty ipod and computer and all the music I have and the movies Ive got are all years old, and have been repeated over and over and over again, now some would say that its a good test of ones contentment, and to be honest they say its against the law to buy illegal music/movies, but here you cant buy legally even if you want to, shops that use the name of overseas stores and companies and print out the whole cardboard jackets with proper cd covers and advertising, so basically they have the same amount of plastic and waste around them, but they have just been burnt off from the internet, so what can I do? buy illegal music/movies and increase the trade? or do I just download straight from the net, cut out the middle man, save myself a few bucks or what???

US troops leave Aussie for dead in Iraq, and i thought we were on the same team!!!
AN Australian private security operator was left for dead by American forces after he was seriously wounded during an ambush in southern Iraq.
The US refused to provide a helicopter to evacuate the wounded man after being told he was Australian, News Limited reports.The Queensland man, who suffered severe leg and abdominal injuries, was delivered to Basra air base by a British road convoy more than seven hours after the attack.The June 25 attack near the town of Al Zubair, 15km southwest of Basra, was carried out by at least six gunmen and involved roadside bombs, small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.Two Toyota Landcruisers were destroyed in the attack.Three of the man's Iraqi colleagues, including an Iraqi interpreter, died in the attack.The security operator underwent surgery at a British military hospital and was later evacuated out of Iraq.He remains in the region in a serious but stable condition. What a crazy world we live when family members can just get dumped out with the garbage, now the elderly in the west should be very grateful, that they even have a place to go when they get kicked out, but in other lesser off countries, if your family dont want ya anymore you get the boot and theres no where for you to go or any one to take care of you, so just like what happened in India, you better keep ya mouth shut before your kids throw you out into the garbage

Now I'm not female, i thought i would state that first but back were i'm from we are told it shouldnt be undertaken until after a girl/women is 16 or 18 because of physical development issues with the legs, back and muscles involved. Apparently these shoes are not very good at all for the body, but in this country they have them start young, ive seen parents buy high heels for 2 and 3 year old daughters now is this just ridiculous or what ???

A bomb disposal officer wounded in a costly explosion in Yala on Tuesday morning has died at a hospital from injuries.
Sen Sgt Maj Subin Prutmongkol, whose legs and arms were ripped off from the blast, died after an operation to try to save his life.The bomb disposal unit went to a busy railway station to defuse a bomb hidden in the front basket of a motorcycle. But it was a ruse to draw people to the scene, and insurgents touched off a more powerful bomb after a crowd had gathered.The deadly bomb was hidden inside the same motorcycle and it was triggered by remote control, probably a cell phone.The second bomb wounded 18 people, including four local reporters and seven policemen. The reporters were from TV Channels 3, 7, ITV and a local newspaper.In a second violent incident on Tuesday, a Muslim man was shot dead by two militants at a tea room in Yaha district. Witnesses told police that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, and shot him with a handgun.Meanwhile, another Muslim man was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in the same province.

How can Thailand or any country improve when everyone passes
Nothing will get better in Thailand until there are large sweeping reforms throu the education system and politics. As a teacher in this country we are told that you can NOT fail any students, so whats the point of people turning up to class if they are going to pass any way. No country can ever improve when people dont learn, to be honest I certainly wouldnt study if I knew I was going to get my degree any way. What a joke of a system, its just fun to go along for the ride, when really it doesnt matter what we do, cause everybody will pass any way. Some people are going to have face some truth soon, and realize that for a country to improve its economic social status, and decrease poverty, sickness and the standard of living, some people are going to have to fail, and some people are actually going to have to do some work!!!

A giant squid has had enough of living in the darkness and has decided to follow the light, hallelujah. I love when these stories come up because there is still so much that we dont even know about our own world, while so many people are obssessed with other things outside, but i guess ya dont want all your eggs in the one basket if ya get what i mean. But this well known but very very ellusive creature is rarely seen alive and even more rarley captured, so each time one washes up I'm sure scientists start creaming their pants. Now one has decided to treat us with his/her presence, a squid washed up dead on Tasmania's west coast (thats in Australia if you dont know) is one of the biggest ever found, weighing in at 250 kilograms, with a cross-section as big as a truck tyre and longer than a station wagon. Scientists, who see it as an exciting and intriguing discovery, will today take DNA and tissue samples from the sea monster

What is lacking in our society that so many people fall for the trap??? now I've tried a few drugs from cigarettes and up, but never have I felt the urge to use them so often, thou billions of people around the world are addicted to one drug or another. Now I should provide a disclaimer right off the bat here, apparently it was just a joke, said by Mr Daniel from silverchair on the radio. But who realy cares if these three had a joint. Its not a matter of national security, and how many rockers past and present have had a joint, I mean how many people in the world have had a toke on the old scuuuuuuuuuube, its not illegal everywhere, someplaces allow it freely in bars, so why is it that every time some celebrity lets it slip that they actually had a drag is all of a sudden throw into the spot light and presented as a criminal, now drugs have the potential for good and bad, dependnig upon the hands it which they fall. Now if your staying at home everyday just sucking down the smoke then obviously its going to have some mental and physical effects. But if its a one off occasion a few times a year ha ha ha, then its by no means more harmful than walking down any street in your neighbourhood. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end but a beginning. Those who hoped that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

If you really wanna know if its love then take the test (even i failed but thats no surprise)
The only way to find out if its love without actually doing anything, is to just imagine whether you would feel any animosity or anger/hatred or even fear if the person you loved died (if you believe in God) of if they ran off with your best friend and got married and had babies, if any of those feelings come up, THEN IT AINT LOVE!!! caring about some one no matter what they do or where they go, and only wishing the best for them and that will find happiness, even if that doesnt include you.
From the moment you stop growing, is the moment you starting dying, now that works on two levels, physical and mental. Physically because the body is loosing its ability to replicate cells exactly the same as before which is why we get old in the first place, because each time a cell dies and is replaced it is replaced by a new one in exactly the same form, WHEN WE ARE YOUNG, but then as we get to a certain age, cells loose that ability, so what ever delusions you have about a long and healthy life are just sweet dreams you will never taste. The sooner you wake up to the fact that this body is not perfect, but only a vehicle for the journey, that comes with no guarantee, or warranty, the better, you need to start facing the fact that in weeks or years your body will fail. AND YOU THINK YOUR IN CONTROL HA HA HA, but I cant help but feel sorry for those who will find it hard to let go.

A great quote from Tyler durden, now i agree with this in part, i think physical "Self-improvement is masturbation", but we should all strive for spiritual improvement, as Tyler said we have no great war, our war is the spiritual war, as never has the West been so infected with eastern ideas and philosphies, and vice versa, never has the East been so influenced by meaningless western ideals of capatalism. I feel that in a hundred years or so very few languages will exist and cultures will be wiped out, with probably on the top four or five languages being able to ride this "evolution" out, our world is getting smaller and as it does we will all have to learn how to get a long with each other, regardless of race, money, religion or any other form of judgement you can think of, so lets just learn to love, and stop hating, because you dont understand, your afraid, or just jealous of some one else. Words cannot express truth, that which words express is no truth
Words are only symbols, these symbols which you read can have more than one meaning depending upon your history, memories and judgements, all the baggage you have changes and blurrs the meanings of symbols, so truth can no longer be expressed by words. All they can do is point you in some direction. Take "LOVE" for example, it means different things for different people. "God" means different things for different people. Also words are just words, and the truth is truth, one can not switch, nor be replaced.
When will u mature n actually admitt the only person that can make u angry/happy is urself !!!
I'm tired of listening to people blame others for how they feel, its the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard, and goes further to prove that people are yet to evolve, and would rather blame others for how they feel, because they are to afraid/ignorant to face the truth. How can you blame others for a descision you have made yourself. There are a million reactions one could have to any situation, and yet you would rather blame others for it, so they you dont have to deal with, when dealing with it would make it stop forever, but then I know most people dont even consider their feelings or why and when they begin, so what can I expect from people who would rather live in a false happiness, that a true one.
Why is the best question u can ever ask, if your honest and intelligent enough!!!

Its goes a long when one asks WHY would they do that or feel that? The why question is also endless, and will either end in I dont know, I dont understand, or I dont care. Why not ask how do they feel? Do you need help?
But if your intelligent and honest enough with your self, you will be able to answer most of the questions you ever have about yourself, some may take time to understand, but in the end it wont be that hard.

So many seem so hung up on proveing or disproveing Gods existence, for me it makes no difference whether he's up there watching or not, I'm still going to live my life the same way, by trying to help others, increase happiness, and try to reduce the amount of suffering out there, were all gonna find out any way when we die, so why not try and show some more love for your fellow beings, rather than trying to manipulate and force others to agree with your opinions with your "proof", if some one wants to believe then let them in their own way and time, otherwise you will just alienate them more and more, I love you all and hope you all find what ur looking for XOXO

Its a shame that all the negative things that arise in the world come from people not thinking about others, because they are so absorbed with thinking most often negatively about themselves, and worrying about what others are thinking about them. Now apparently this has been going on for decades, but I just learnt about it over the weekend. The king of Thailand a few decades ago developed another strategy to help the impoverished farmers of Thailand, which was to induce rain in areas of Thailand that of course were suffering drought conditions, so that the farmers were able to survive, produce crops and sell them at the market. Now I want to ask if this has been going on for so long why hasnt anyone else done this in other countries, or does it depend upon Thailands geography and climate???

Thailand will never be able to recover if people dont stop thinking about themselves and grow up. There has been so much bickering and squabbling over the past few months that nothing has been done, and everything that is completed is abused and rejected. A country needs to grow and live together and for that to happen people have to be able to communicate face to face, and honestly, and they have to know when to compromise, I'm tired of seeing this beautiful country being sent down the toilet, because people are so selfish and lack the simple ability of honesty, it seems every one is out to make a few baht regardless of what happens to the country and its people. This is what an advocate of the death penalty in Australia is proposing, because locking up a person for life is paramount to torture is his justification, and that the individual should be allowed to end his/her life, this has come up recently as a serial killer in an Australian prison has already attempted suicide on several occasions, so if a man/women kills one or more persons should suicide be an option for them? Never say never, oh i never learn
I've officailly lost count of the things that I said I would never do or happen, but I've finally stopped, (i'm a slow learner), when I was younger, going throu my "I know everything", rebellious stage, I said I would never work every day of the week, among a few other things. Thou at that time I was in a shitty part time job, assuming that all jobs were shitty but then I stumbled into another profession and have found myself working everyday of the week, now many would say its not work and I agree, basically I get pain 30 dollars a day in a third world country to talk for about 4 hours each day, while the rest of my week I spend pissing around on the internet, but I actually enjoy my time working, one thing I thought was impossible.

A police officer confirmed the riot. It was not immediately clear why the girl was attacked.
"A lot of students were rioting last night, and the situation was quite serious," the official, surnamed Wang, said.
"The general city police office had to send more police to help," she said.
The case was under investigation.
Six officials were detained for not containing the violence, a local newspaper, the Dahe News said, and according to the human rights centre, five students were detained.
Unrest of any kind is highly sensitive in China, whose Communist government prizes stability and brooks no challenges to its power.
But student protests are an even more potent symbol because of a legacy of student activism, most recently in the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations on Tiananmen Square.
A widening gap between rich and poor, corruption and official abuses of power have fuelled a growing number of demonstrations and riots around the country, often sparked by seemingly minor issues.

But government schools have to report directly to the police, Private schools have recently come under a heavy bararge, and rightly so, why is it they get to keep their name out of the papers and the news, while government schools get tainted, for students either pushing or doing drugs in school grounds. It seems to be a hot debate, not just with in the profession but also by those who remain ignorant. I know first hand who will of course remain nameless, but what the Dr was doing has been going on for decades, and continues to go on in every country across the world. Clem Lindenmayer disappeared while hiking near Minya Konka mountain in the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Ganzi, according to China's Xinhua news agency. A separate posting on an open forum operated by Lonely Planet and accredited to Mr Lindenmayer's father Graeme said the 47-year-old was believed to have gone missing in the area of Kangding, in China's Sichuan province.

"I assure you this is not a hoax," the posting reads.
"We have done all the appropriate reporting but have heard nothing yet. "Clem normally replies to our emails, but does not give details of his treks (other than where and about how long) until he returns. "He has not replied to recent emails, including some about matters that we handle on his behalf. "
A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said the man's family in Melbourne was trying to locate him and the department was providing consular assistance. Mr Lindenmayer is a freelance travel writer who last worked for Lonely Planet publications in November 2003, a spokeswoman for the company said. Mr Lindenmayer last had contact with his family on May 2 and was expected to resume contact eight days later, according to a message posted by family members on a Lonely Planet website. Family members contacted by today refused to talk about Mr Lindenmayer's possible whereabouts.
According to the Lonely Planet website, Mr Lindenmayer is based in Switzerland and has written Walking in Switzerland, Trekking in the Patagonian Andes, the Rocky Mountains chapter of Hiking in the USA, and helped update its guidebooks for China, Malaysia and the German and Swedish sections of Western Europe.
