Your all addicted to something, is it a choice?

There are so many addictions out there, but why??? I think primarily it has to do with peoples inability to enjoy the silence of the present moment.

One of the first documented uses of the word addict was used as an adjective meaning of delivered or devoted. This was in 1529, and comes from the Latin word addictus which comes from addicere. In this case, the word ‘ad’ meaning deliver, yield, devote, and the word ‘dicere’ meaning say or declare. However, the history of addiction in connection to a drug didn’t come along until 1906 with a reference to opium. This is the date in which the term became more widely used. From that point on, ‘addiction’ was mostly a term that was pharmacological, relating to the process of ones body becoming dependant as their drug tolerance rose.

Many define addiction by using the term control of a substance or emotion, but then how can you be addcited, if you have no choice?

Here is a list of things people can be addicted to?
Video games, the internet, online games, pain, anger, clothes, money, bullying, drugs, sex, people, places, music, religion, animals, eating, fighting, watching TV, shopping, driving, gambling, stealing, swearing, killing, destroying, annoying, slapping, scratching, cleaning,

Yes I believe addiction at least in many circumstances starts as a choice, sometimes overtakes and overwhelms the person and that is when it becomes more than simple doing something over and over through choice for fun and can become quite serious.

I agree, but theres been such a big push against drug addiction, what about religious addiction?? internet addiction? and why is that some drugs are legal and yet others arent? all drugs have the possibilty for one to develop an "addiction" its just some are condoned by the government. Why? because they make money from the sale of some and not from others, smoking and alcohol cause the governments to lose more money than all other drugs collected and yet these are still legal. Since when did we allow Governemnts to decide what we can put into our own bodies? I thought democracy was about free will?

lol..yes by definition it is, but as I know from the government we live under..its a nanny state, very little free will, very little decision making is allowed, guidelines for everything including how our children have to be taught, to what we are allowed to produce and buy in this country. as to the addiction, cigarettes and alcohol are legal because they can be heavily taxed, other lesser if U want softer drugs aren't because they would start to loose control on what enters / leaves the country, If we had free will there is the possibility for chaos many people are not able to have freedom of choice because they just don't know how to have informed choice. allot people are like sheep, prefer to be told what to do and what not too.

Well isnt the govenment suppossed to educate us, if the people arent educated i agree we cant have free will, which begins to break down the idea of democracy, how can we have democracy without free will, but then how can we have free will without the govenrment??? I think governments dont us to have free will, i think they create situation in the world which increase the stress and suffering of the people, so that they feel they have no speech, no choice, no voice so they have to act out in the only ways they r shown how by the government of course which is violence, which only then reinforces and allows the govenment to put more controls on us, n tells us we r not able to make descisions on our own

U c that's a major problem in our society, government over rule what our teachers can and cannot teach our children, schools, teachers and children are ruled to learn certain topics/subjects at a particular time if this is not done to exact times made by the government the schools are rated as poor schools and parent are less likely to place their children there..for example. I had my 2 boys in a school rated excellent in gov. statts, but in reality this school was very poor, not just in the way that the children where taught but in the way violence by other children was dealt with.
and yes I agree, although we live in a democracy the only democratic thing we really are allowed is to vote and even then its a choice of 1 or another corrupt party that can never or very rarely deliver what they promise.

Vote is just a role play, your not even voting for who you think, and the policies they say they will implement are all just further roles plays to get peoples votes, and education in many countries is getting very serious these days especially since more parents are taking an interestes in what is being taught the problem, is the blame is being put onto the school, which is wrong cause the schools r only puppets of the governmnet, so where do you start, do you start with the schools, or do you start with the governments you were you told you voted for, and the teachers r further just a product of the schools and governments, the teachers have to follow strict guidlines and if they dont they will lose their jobs, be demoted or get shifted around to different schools until they just quit or get burnt out

victoria gornik said...

yes that's very right many teachers have left our schools as they get disheartened with how the schools are told to run by the government, its the government that needs to change/the system from which it works, the schools and the teachers are not to be blamed for the poor teaching that is in our schools today but the government, very closed view on the world and the subjects our children are allowed to learn in our schools, and in effect its the school and the teachers that get blamed for this poor teaching and not the government who really is to blame.

This brings me back to an old point, and that is we the people have the power but we get shot down and abused if we speak, because not enough people realize they r in control, its not the governments we need they need us, and yet people so easily follow everything they say which is complete bollocks, our whole idea/concept of demcrocay was based solely on this that governments r to serve the people, and yet in the last 200 years or so, the people have slowly lost that connection and have become to only serve the governments, its like the BUGS LIFE that the Grasshoppers rule the ants, even thou the ants out number them 100 -1, its about being brainwashed and fed rubbish from the day we are born that we need the governmnets, that we are powerless, and that our only way to voice our opinion is by a fking vote, its all just fkin bollocks, whats more depressing is that few people see this, and that so many are just doin as they are told, is the purpose of human beings to be consumers and spend our days working shit jobs, just to make money and buy food, when even now governments are saying that many people have to work two jobs, because they cant control the economy so in effect we the masses have to make extra food so that the fat cats can live in luxury im fkin fed up, and tired of waiting for the human population to stand up

victoria gornik said...

do U think the masses would stand up?..I don't many go through life with blinkers on and are happy with how their lives are governed..

Its like they say in the "now you know the truth would you still want to go back"
this is the problem thou people are slaves and they dont even know it, this is the genius of all governments, "the people are more likley to believe a big lie than a little one" hitler

this is one delima in philosophy, do people want to be ignorant and happy, or know the truth and suffer?

victoria gornik said...

I think that's a personal choice, many would prefer ignorance because as they say ignorance is bliss, but many would prefer the truth , because when U know the truth you can deal with it, may be suffering or may be a way of having more control over our own lives, our own choices..which I believe is free will.

second heaven said...

How can u have free will, if everything u have been taught has be controlled and designed????
how can you have free choice when the govenments control the media and eductaion???? Do you think any school is teaching the pros n cons about dictatorship or facism????
Growing up in England what your taught as truth would be different to what some one in Iran or North Korea is taught, so where do we get free will from if the governments design our education system and control our media????

victoria gornik said...

U can't plain and simple, the gov. has to let go of so much control then maybe in future genarations free will would be possible

second heaven said...

No u seriouly cant expect the gov to just let go, wat the hell have u been smoking, what need to happen is simple, the people have to wake up. lol easy ay

victoria gornik said...

lmao, yes very easy, will never happen thou

second heaven said...

How optimistic of you, so the human race is doomed to become exctint because of its own greed, ego, and blindness?????

victoria gornik said...

lol..maybe not extinct but but ego and greed will lead to downfall.. although I say this I do believe there is growing numbers of people who are seeing how it is and want change, I think many feel powerless, a small fish in a big pond and don't know or unaware of how they can change the way gov. and life as we know it can be changed.

I think people know but are afraid they are alone, the more poeple i meet i on the net are always surprised theres other people out there with the same ideas and inclinations, there r very few places in the cities and such where people are able to talk or listen to others, in the old days there used to be open discussions and debates in the city centers where people of all walks could come and speak about what ever they liked, i think we need to bring this back
